Z Bui (he/him), Playwright
"Writing a play was something I really wanted to do but had no idea how to go about it. I dreamed about creating an unapologetically queer play but was anxious about having that queerness honoured. Fruit Box Theatre did that and so much more. They were incredibly supportive in every imaginable way, including me at every stage and giving me the chance to collaborate with so many passionate artists so I could really get to the heart of my play. I don't think it would have become the same piece of work without them, and the process definitely wouldn't have been anywhere near as fun or joyful."

"Fruit Box are doing indie theatre right. Accessibility and diversity have many production companies afraid – afraid of getting it wrong. They need only to look at Fruit Box to get it right. Working with these exquisite, colourful humans was one of the best theatre experiences I’ve had and I have no doubt that Maddy and Sean have a strong road of success ahead of them."

"I love working with Fruit Box Theatre! Their process is super inclusive and flexible and should be a leading example of best practice for working in queer spaces. At all times, I felt supported and safe in the development room, and am excited to see their continual support of upcoming and established queer and POC voices throughout all their work."

“Fruit Box Theatre is that rare theatrical beast: a place that is safe enough for joyous risk-taking, while maintaining high artistic standards. And this sense of safety is all the more important for queer creatives and audience members alike. We need more companies like Fruit Box. Working with this dream team of unfeasibly gifted people was a career highlight for me. Long may they continue to produce beautiful theatre that raises a smile and provokes a thought long after the curtain comes down. I’d work with them again in a heartbeat.”

“Stepping into any Fruit Box rehearsal space was like stepping through the front door of home. You knew you were safe, you knew that whatever you offered would be encouraged and explored, and you knew you were among the best of people. Working with such incredible creatives pushed and stretched me as an artist and a person, and it was an experience I will forever be thankful for.”

“Working with this emerging group of talented and committed young theatre professionals was an even more rewarding experience than I anticipated. Their commitment to their craft and the energy and focus they put into creating a welcoming space to nurture high quality performances was like a shot of adrenaline into these aging bones. Fruit Box strive to deliver contemporary content at high standards and I found the exchange of ideas and vision for the future to be both exciting and engaging. I would leap at the chance to contribute to their goals again.“

“I was so lucky to be part of Fruit Box’s inaugural RIPE Program. From the get-go, the organisation was smooth and Sean and Maddy have been incredible inspirational people throughout the whole process. Their vitality and constant support has been instrumental in the success of the play I developed through their initiative. The Development Days with fellow writers and actors, workshopping and brainstorming scenes and character developments made my writing process better than it had ever been, and I cannot thank the whole team enough for their contribution to the play. The diversity of the RIPE Program's recipients broadened my horizons and challenged my views on many topics, and not only made me a stronger playwright, they made be a better human being. Thank you so much for this invaluable experience.”

"Working with Fruit Box Theatre over a number of days on ‘Sex. Riot. Repeat’, enabled me to see what a hard-working, fun and inclusive company Fruit Box Theatre is. This is a theatre company to watch out for as they present LGBTIQ+ theatre that informs and entertains a diverse audience."
