  • Aliyah Knight's 'Snakeface'

    July 2024

We spent a magical week in July at the Randwick Literary Institute, thanks to the incredible support of Randwick City Council developing Aliyah Knight’s new play Snakeface.

This bold and innovative play reimagines the myth of Medusa through a queer, Black, modern lens and was recently awarded runner up in the Australian Theatre Festival’s New Play Award.

Aliyah spent a fruitful week exploring a movement language for the piece with Bernadette Fam and Fetu Taku. This work and this week is a testament to why we love working on original theatre here at Fruit Box!

  • RIPE Development Program

    2022 - 2023

Fruit Box Theatre is committed to taking original LGBTQIA+SB theatre through its whole life from conception to fruition.

In 2022/23, through a series of consultations, workshops and developments, we worked with a collective of 18 writers and actors to bring five original pieces of queer theatre to the stage. Four of these productions have now premiered with Fruit Box Theatre (French Letters and Leather Cleaner, Comfort, Spin, Travel, Back to Birdy and Nails Must Be Kept Short: The Warm Up). Watch this space for updates on the final play; Act Natural.

  • Felicity Nicol's 'Sex. Riot. Repeat.'

    May 2024

Thanks to the generous support of Create NSW, Inner West Council, Waverley Council’s Bondi Pavillion Housewarming Program, Darlinghurst Theatre Company and City of Sydney Creative Spaces, we have supported Felicity Nicol on the development of this important new work.

‘Sex. Riot. Repeat.’ (formerly ‘Political Animals’) is a kaleidoscopic ride through Australian LGBTQIA+ history. Part history lesson, part political protest, part party, ‘Sex. Riot. Repeat.’ unveils the Australian fight for queer rights & key moments - fabulous & fugly – along the way. Created from and for community, ‘SRR’ blends physical theatre, verbatim, projection and real community activists onstage - with a powerhouse ensemble leading us along the way. Offered as a timely homecoming for queer audiences, ‘SRR’ reveals the grit behind the glitter of social activism and the power of pride.

  • First Nations LGBTQIA+SB Live Performance Development Series

    Ongoing

In collaboration with BlaQ Aboriginal Corporation, Fruit Box Theatre is building a development series to bring new queer First Nations work to the stage.

We are in the consultation phase of this development and will be holding a second community consultation in early 2024. Please reach out to us at hello@fruitboxtheatre.com.au if you are an LGBTQIA+SB First Nations artist and would like to be involved.

  • Etcetera Etcetera's 'Big Screen, Small Queen'

    November 2023

Thanks to the support of Darlinghurst Theatre Company, City of Sydney Creative Spaces and Improv Theatre Sydney, we spent a week in November 2023 redeveloping this new queer work after it’s premier during Sydney WorldPride.

Etcetera Etcetera is ready to play the biggest role of her life - herself! Returning to set for the first time since film school, Etcetera has been given the chance to star in a movie about her life - but if she’s not in charge, who’s calling the shots? Big Screen, Small Queen is a fast paced, comic romp through the mind of an artist and queer person trying to make it in a big scary world. Starring Rupaul’s Drag Race star Etcetera Etcetera as herself, this show has something for fans of cinema and drag alike. Lights, camera, action?
